Founded by Francesca Migliorati and Chiara Rusconi in the historic Palazzo Cigola Fenaroli in Brescia in 2008, APALAZZOGALLERY is a gallery specializing in contemporary art that works with both emerging young artists and established institutional names, both Italian and foreign.
Refusing to identify with any particular category and following a principle of inclusivity and multiculturalism, the gallery highlights the practice of numerous female artists, including Nathalie Du Pasquier, Lucia Pescador, Marta Pierobon, Nathlie Provosty, Servane Mary and Olympia Scarry, weaving a multigenerational female narrative. This is intertwined with the diasporic narrative of artists such as Sonia Boyce DBE RA, Edson Chagas, and Ibrahim Mahama, whose engagement in the post-colonial social and political debate has been recognized worldwide with numerous awards. Thanks to this principle, the gallery blends numerous languages ranging from Net Art with the duo Eva & Franco Mattes to the natural practice of Ann Iren Buan and Agustas Serapinas.
Over the years, the gallery has also undertaken a meticulous process of research and study of the Estates such as Jonas Mekas, Giorgio Ciam and Larry Stanton, whose artistic careers, although extremely significant, have long been overlooked in the contemporary art scene. Working closely with archives and heirs, the gallery enhances its research and history through charming retrospectives and the publication of previously unpublished monographs and catalogues raisonnés.
Since its inception, APALAZZOGALLERY has presented and promoted an exhibition and curatorial program capable of offering high-quality solo and group shows with exceptional museum-level installations unprecedented in Italy, such as Raúl De Nieves’ show Betwixt the Hands of Time (2022); Nathalie Du Pasquier’s Il treno per Brescia viaggia con 5 minuti di ritardo (2021); Ibrahim Mahama’s In Dependence (2018) and IF THESE ARE THE THINGS (2024); Lucia Pescador’s Africa per sentito dire (2023); and Augustas Serapinas’ Summer in Rudninkai (2021). For its exhibitions, the gallery regularly collaborates with prominent curators and art historians whose contributions make each project unique. The shows are also regularly accompanied by Project Rooms hosting young artists in whom the gallery has a deep interest, even if it does not represent them. During the exhibitions, the gallery organizes conferences, talks, and screenings, transforming itself into a place of dialogue between artists and the public, particularly involving both local and non-local schools and academies.
APALAZZOGALLERY’s activity is not limited to its space in Brescia but extends internationally with site-specific public commissions, museum exhibitions, art fairs – Art Basel Unlimited, Frieze London, and The Armory Show – and biennials around the world – La Biennale di Venezia and The Desert Biennale | Desert X Alula – among others. In 2022, Sonia Boyce DBE RA was awarded the Golden Lion for Best National Participation at the 59th International Art Exhibition of Venice for her exhibition Feeling Her Way. In 2013, during the 55th International Art Exhibition, Edson Chagas was awarded the Golden Lion for Best National Participation for his exhibition Luanda, Encyclopedic City, which inaugurated the first Angolan pavilion.
