SONIA BOYCE SOLO SHOW AT MORI ART MUSEUM

Museum exhibition

Sonia Boyce opens her first solo exhibition in Japan at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo. The show, entitled MAM Project 034: Sonia Boyce, features Devotional Wallpaper and Placards (2008-2020), the most expansive iteration of Boyce’s ongoing “Devotional” series. “Devotional” began in 1999 when the artist collaborated with the Liverpool Black Sisters; during a workshop, she invited participants to recall the first record they bought and to name a Black British female singer. This experience prompted Boyce to create a living archive celebrating overlooked Black British female performers. Over the next two decades, she collected records, magazine covers and memorabilia donated by members of the public.
