Samuel Baah Kortey (b. 1994, Asesewa, Ghana) lives and works in Kumasi, Ghana. He holds a BFA and MFA from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana (2013–2022). In 2023, he graduated from Hochschule für Bildende Kunste, Stadelschule, Fine Art in Frankfurt, Germany. His source materials start with historical archives, daily happenings and moments referencing death, decay and struggles, which carefully materialise into objects or thought-provoking adventures. As an observer, Samuel investigates and highlights post-colonial traces of modern societies’ ways of life through documentation of the mundane, recordings and access to the street visual culture of cities. The artist is a member of three collectives, blaxTARLINES and Commune6x3, and a co-founder of the Asafo Black Collective.
His work has been recently included in several exhibitions, such as: Fragments of a World After Its Own Image, curated by Kwasi Ohene-Ayeh, APALAZZOGALLERY, Brescia, Italy (2025); Circolo Nero Atelier, n.8, Recontres Pan-africaines, Villa Medici, Roma, Italy (2024); Graater than the sum of our parts, After the Burcher, Berlin, Germany (2024); The are times like these, The Recovery Plan, Florence, Italy (2023). He has been awarded the Villa Romana Prize (2023); Gwaertler Stiftung (2022); and Sparkesse 1822 Forum (2022).
