Joël Andrianomearisoa

Joël Andrianomearisoa (b. 1977, Antananarivo, Madagascar) lives and works between Paris, France and Antananarivo, Madagascar.

Andrianomearisoa fuses poetry, performance, installation and scenography within a polyphonic universe that invades every part of his viewers’ sensitive space. Thus, he uses no particular hierarchical order of sounds, books, textiles as well or organic materials in monochromatic works, magnifying all the nuances of black colour. Joël Andrianomearisoa emphasises intimacy and fragility, mapping thoughts, emotions and social realities in attractive yet mysterious environments. He is an avid collector of textiles, clothing and papers, which he tears, cuts and weaves to form monumental collages in his iconic series The Labyrinth of Passions. They appear as immersive aerial environments in which to lose oneself and be exposed to a whirlwind of feelings. The rustle of cascading silk paper, sensitive to vibration, breezes, breathing and the moving bodies of visitors, comes to life with a whispered and fleeting musicality.

In 2019, Andrianomearisoa represented Madagascar at the 58th Biennale di Venezia, and his work has been exhibited in several international institutions, such as MAXXI Rome, Italy; Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin, Germany; the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, Washington DC, US and Centre Pompidou, Paris, France.
