Public Commission
As part of the inaugural class of Art Basel Awards Gold Awardees, Ibrahim Mahama is unveiling a major new public artwork in Basel, God of Small Things (2026).
This is the first time that commissions from the Awards programme have been premiered in the city where they were first recognised. As the inaugural Gold Awardee in the Established Artist category, Mahama was invited to design an ambitious, location-specific project for a public space in Basel.
His large-scale installation on Münsterplatz extends the exhibition’s presence into the historic heart of the city, reinforcing Art Basel’s commitment to supporting artists beyond exhibition spaces and exploring new formats.
