Talk
Ibrahim Mahama takes part in this year’s ART SG Perspectives series. Mahama will join Kymberly Pinder, Dean of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Yale School of Art, for an engaging conversation exploring the central themes of his artistic practice and its relationship with craftsmanship. Mahama has gained international renown for his large-scale, politically charged installations featuring recycled materials, such as jute sacks, which allude to global transactions and capitalist structures. These installations are draped over architectural buildings.
The discussion will examine issues such as urban redevelopment, social responsibility, collaboration and the new independence of West African nations and other postcolonial territories. The political significance of craftsmanship, materiality, and the hierarchies of labour that shape global production will also be considered, as will creative diversity.
