AUGUSTAS SERAPINAS WITH GYM BARGE AT CURONIAN LAGOON

Performance

In August 2025, Augustas Serapinas brought his Gym Barge to the Curonian Lagoon in Nida, Lithuania. This performance installation was housed on a 38-metre-long, flat-bottomed, steel cargo ship — also known as a ‘barge’ — which was built in 1990.

The artist’s exercise equipment functions as both a training facility and an exhibition space, blending into the surrounding landscape. The work is based on the artist’s personal experience at the M. K. Čiurlionis National School of Art, where the focus of art education was on developing technical skills such as drawing, sculpting and painting by copying nature and plaster models of Greek and Renaissance sculptures.
